Visual Boy Zune (GB/GBC Emu.)

UPDATED!!

This is the first Gameboy Classic and Gameboy Color Emulator for the Zune HD!!!  You can play any Gameboy or Gameboy Color games just so you have the ROM for it….. Google’s your friend.

Controls:

  • Use the Select your roms from the Rom Selection Screen on first boot up.
  • Use the D-Pad to move, Action buttons “A” and “B”, as well as the start, select, and menu button(which changes layout)
  • To exit the app simply push the home button, but be aware that if you have a pin, or want to play DRM’d music, you must restart your zune.
  • Read the Read-Me for extra controls and functions such as how to add ROM’s and ROM art.
  • Place ROMS in the rom folder under content in the zip, then run deploykit.exe

Current Build Status:

  • VBA-M builds targeted to OpenZDK
  • Display works
  • Input works
  • Dumb layout selector works
  • Choppy Sound
  • GBA games now work!!
  • Game Saves work!!
  • Supports custom Layouts!!

Cha0s you must “acquire” the pokemon rom. Those games are just samples that just come with the emulator… Google is your friend, just make sure the extension is either .gbc or .gb

Read the Read-Me included with the download.

you have to make sure that both the .zip and the .gbc/.gb inside the zip are the same exact name, same with the pictures…… Example:
    mario.zip
    >mario.gb
    mario.png

    Then redeploy

Are you still working on getting sound and gameboy advance games to work? I don’t want to loose my saves if I re-deploy the app because a new version of this app got released.

I am having problems deploying the games. If I don’t add any games, it deploys fine, but when I try to add any games, it gives me an error message “Invaled file name. Max file length os 40. [exception from fault code 103]”
I don’t know what is wrong because none of my file names are 40 characters. Help please.

don’t unzip the rom. Just put that zip file in the rom folder and it will work.

  17. husker91
    Posted May 23, 2010 at 10:38 pm | Permalink

People. roms go inside the roms folder inside of a zip file…. example:::

    roms
    ___zelda.png
    ___zelda.zip
    ______ zelda.gb

    ___mario.png
    ___mario.zip
    ______mario.gb

You can get pngs from google, just search, same as roms.

DO NOT LINK ROM SITES AS IT IS ILLEGAL!!!
If this continues to be an issue people who link sites will no longer be able to comment!!

Its Okay, the actual rom must be in a zip archive. the picture just goes straight in the roms folder. You can use winzip, etc to place the .gb file inside a zip. NOT RAR

how do i get the .png’s?

  35. The Predator
    Posted June 2, 2010 at 11:00 am | Permalink

Ok, To get the pictures applied to each ROM, First get a picture you want for your ROM, Second make sure its in .png file type (you can learn this by right clicking the picture and looking at its properties) if its not I reccomend opening it up with paint (right click it and choose “open with” then choose “paint”) Now click “file” then “Save as” and then there should be a “save as type” if you can, change that to .png. Now you gotta save that into ROMs folder in the content folder. Now, change the name of your picture to be EXACTLY the name of you Zip folder (ROM) (if you don’t know how to rename it all you have to do is right click it and then choose “rename”) Now double click the zip folder, in it there should be a file ALSO rename that file to be the same. Now after you redeploy the app it should all work out. If it doesn’t work, tell me. I tried to make it as fool proof as possible.

I’m pretty sure none of the copy rights are recent if its on the Gameboy Color. :p I got pokemon yellow and its copy righted from 1997 to 1999 (or something close to that) so I’m pretty sure that the company can’t press charges but they might get mad.

@Predator, thank you for giving straightforward answers, do u know if mario and donkey kong are copyrighted?

  44. Posted June 5, 2010 at 10:33 am | Permalink

No Predator, all games except some hombrews are copyrighted and illegal to download. Copyrights last a long time. Even Atari games are still copyrighted.

Of course, you most likely wont get caught from downloading these games, but it is still illegal.

  45. The Predator
    Posted June 5, 2010 at 2:53 pm | Permalink

Oh really? Dang it……… hmm I might think twice about downloading another ROM. BTW, Helpless, Check your zune to see if the rom got on there anyway, if It didn’t try whittling down the name of the zip file and the file inside. (I got that error too and I’m not exactly sure how I fixed it) For example “Super mario bros 3″ to “Mario” (Keep in mind that you have to change the .png picture name too if you do that)

@ indee13, Your pic looks like a bleeding children’s drawing of a cloud…….. Just had to point that out……

Btw not trying to be a bad influence but think about it, there are millions of people who download roms and you might be one of them. How is nintendo gonna catch you, one person out of a million, downloading roms. And another thing is NINTENDO DOESN’T EVEN SELL GAMEBOY COLOR GAMES ANYMORE!!!!!!!!! How can they be mad?!?!?! (if there is this secret site made by Nintendo where they sell gameboy color games tell me, I’m pretty sure there’s not) I guess you may be stealing from some random chump trying to sell an ancient gameboy game on ebay or something though, but not really anyone else…….. Food for thought………

  49. Posted June 6, 2010 at 8:55 am | Permalink

    @predator
Nintendo does not want people do download roms because they might have plans to resell the games. They wouldn’t sell them as gameboy carts, but they might release them for other systems. For example, they might create a DS game that is a bundle of gameboy games. The chances of someone getting caught downloading roms is very slim though.

    @Theuser13
You can’t put cheats on it.

    @Jelly

    @ Jelly
have you played the game Acceleroid by DiNo Games before? it is kind of like breakout and space invadors combined. the developer has “triggers” by tapping down on the top (actually the side, but it is played in landscape) of the zune, not on the screen but on the side. im not sure exactly how this works but it could possibly be used for a gameboy advance.

    VbaMZuneDeployer>data>content>roms
for some reason the games didnt have the pictures on as an icon, but i figured out where they are and they work, so can’t rlly complain… hope this helps :)

Here is how to get .png pictures that you can use for your roms. (note, i made this comment to be foolproof, so if i overexplain, you have my apologies.) The official Visual Boy Zune website has a good amount of rom pictures that you can use and are free. (if they don’t have the one you want, there is a link that i havent tried, but has more pictures.) i will put a link to this site at the bottom. Anyways, first thing you’re gonna want to do when you find the picture you want is to right click (don’t ignore this part because you think you’re a smartass and dont need this)and selct open with… Then select Paint and go to save as. At the bottom of the menu thing that comes up is a thing that says save as type. Select PNG (*.PNG). Now shift your attention to the side of the menu. Go to desktop (or wherever you saved visual boy zune) and double click VBA to open it. Now open the file VbaMZuneDeployer inside it, then open the file Data inside that, then open the file Content inside that, then open the file Roms inside that. NOW HIT THE SAVE BUTTON AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MENU THING!!! (Sorry for freaking out, but if you didnt, all those steps from just now would be wasted). Anyways, now close Paint and open the VBA file from wherever you have it saved (double click it). Now open ALL the files you just opened in the SAME ORDER. You should end up in the roms file wherew you just saved your new picture. Now, rename the picture so it has the EXACT same name as the zipped (compressed) folder containing the rom you wanted it for. It is NOT neccassarry to make it end in .png. Now you hit the back button until you end up in the file that contains the file “deploykit.” open (double-click) it and when the security warning comes up (it does on mine dunno about yours) hit run. When the visual boy zune thing pops up, hit deploy to deploy Visual Boy zune with your new picture(s).And you’re done!!! Congrats on the snazzy new pictures. Note; You can, and probably will, do this for all of your roms. Now, for the link I promised, here it is: http://visualboyzune.com/tiki-index.php?page=Rom+Icons.
Just copy and paste it into the http space at the top of the browser. Note, I MADE THIS MOSTLY BY EXPERIENCE THOUGH I DID READ SEVERAL POSTS FROM SEVERAL SITES TO HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT. That is all. Note, I like to write notes like this :D HOPE THIS HELPS

Same thing for me, gb/gbc games run fine but the gba games have a lot of lag on it. I don’t know if it just requires a lot of memory or if gba games require to much from the zune.

If its just the gba games that lag then the previous version won’t help at all since it only supports gbc games. The tegra is fully capable of handling these games, It is up to the developers
